The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe has a rich history and many associated archaeological artefacts have been discovered here. However, you cannot just start digging: this research is subject to very strict protocols, and is exclusively for permit holders and employees of ‘Stichting Cultureel Erfgoed Zeeland’ (the local archaeological association).
The research itself is coordinated by Archeologische Werkgroep Hulst, and the arrangement is that only objects which have surfaced through erosion and natural processes are collected and documented. Other artefacts remain preserved in the soil itself. All findings are property of the Province Zeeland - a good selection can be viewed in the Saeftinghe Visitor Centre.
